FAQ About Amazon Wish Lists

Amazon wish lists are a great way to decide on the right gift to get your loved one or a colleague for an occasion. I wrote about Amazon Wish Lists a few months ago in How to Find Someone’s Wish List on Amazon.

In that article, I shared steps to locating a wish list on Amazon, how to create your own Amazon Wish List, and how to share it with people.

This article will be covering the most FAQs about Amazon Wish Lists so pull up your gift guide organizer for notes.

Amazon Wish List FAQ

1. How do I Look Up Someone’s Wishlist on Amazon?

Go to your Amazon page HERE. You will see 3 tabs at the top for your lists, your idea lists, and your friend’s list.

Your friend needs to share it with you so you can use the Friend’s List tab to send an email to request access to the Wish List.

You can view step-by-step screenshots for how to do that HERE.

2. How Do Amazon Wish Lists Work?

Amazon Wish List helps you to curate items that you would like to receive as gifts or purchase for yourself in the future.

Your Wish List can be set to public, which allows anyone with a link to access it.

You can also send an email with the link to anyone to access the list.

Unless specified, wish lists are usually public and anyone with a link can have access to it. Who would access your wish list?

Someone looking for ideas of what to get you for an occasion or the kind of things you like so they can DIY a gift for you.

3. Are Amazon Wish Lists Anonymous?

You can make your list anonymous by changing the privacy settings. You can also restrict access to the Wish ListYou can set your Amazon Wish List to:-

  • Public (anyone can find it)
  • Private (only you can see it) or
  • Shared (anyone with the link can see it)

You can change your privacy settings under the “more” tab. You can view screenshots for this at How to Find Someone’s Wish List on Amazon.

4. How Do You Know If Someone Purchased Something on Your Amazon Wish List?

When someone makes a purchase from your Wish List, you will receive a notification unless you have selected to set up a spoiler alert.

A spoiler alert prevents you from buying something off your list by mistake and you won’t know someone purchased something from your Wish List until the gift arrives.

5. Can You Have Multiple Wish Lists on Amazon?

You can have as many Wish Lists as you want on Amazon. There’s no limit. You can create a Wish List for every occasion.

You can even create a Wish List for other retailers like eBay and Target right on Amazon.

6. Can I Hide My Address on My Amazon Wish List?

Your address is private on your Wish List. When someone buys you something, the only information that will pop up is your name and city.

Your full address will never show up when someone buys a gift from your Wish List.

However, you should take note of the “third-party shipping agreement” option. If you select this option, it means people can shop your Wish List with other retailers that are not on Amazon.

In this case, Amazon will share your address with those retailers and they may reveal the address to the buyers.

To prevent this, go under More -> Manage list and de-select that option.

7. Can I Find Out What’s in an Amazon Package Without Opening It?

In case you’re not sure about a gift you receive, you can find out what’s inside before opening it.

You need the Amazon App for this. Tap the camera button and select the Package X-Ray feature.

You can then scan the barcode and the app will tell you what’s inside.

This is how it works on an iPhone but you should be able to do the same thing across different phones.

8. Does Amazon Remove Items from my Wish List?

Once a purchase is made from your Wish List, Amazon automatically hides the item to prevent duplicate purchases.

The item only stays on your list if you opted for multiples of the same item. You can go back and retrieve the list of the purchased items later on.

The item also stays on your list if you don’t uncheck the “Keep purchased items on this list” box when setting up the Wish List.

In this scenario, the item will remain on your list with the date it was purchased indicated next to it.

9. What Happened to Amazon Assistant?

Unfortunately, the Amazon Assistant browser extension was discontinued on March 28, 2023.

As of June this year, there’s no suitable alternative to the Amazon Assistant browser extension.

10. How Do Amazon Public Wish Lists Work?

A public Amazon wish list means anyone can find the wish list. You don’t have to send them an invite before they can access the wish list.

If they know your Amazon profile name or email address, they can find your list.

To change the list to private so only the people you invite can see it, go to More -> Manage List -> Privacy and select your preferred setting.

11. What Does Default List on Amazon Mean?

Amazon Wish Lists are public by default. You have to go into settings to make it private or shared.

As long as it’s public, anyone that goes to your profile page on Amazon can find the Wish List.

12. Can You Print an Amazon Wish List?

You can print an Amazon Wish List by clicking the “more” tab. Options to manage list and print list will show up.

Click “print list” and a new page will open up with all items, price, quantity and if anyone has purchased it.

16. Can I Use Alexa With My Amazon Wish List?

With an Alexa-enabled device like Amazon Echo, Echo Show, etc, you can manage all your lists with Alexa.

Just tell Alexa to add something and she will add it to the “Wish List”. You can also ask Alexa to read back the items on your Wish List.

Alexa can also notify you if any of the items on your wish list are on sale or there’s a special deal.

If you only want Alexa to add items, then you need to disable the option to notify you of deals on the Alexa shopping notifications page

To enable the option to use Alexa with your wish list, head over to More -> Manage -> and select your preferred option under “Manage list with Alexa.”

17. Can An Organization Have An Amazon Wish List?

Organizations such as non-profits can have a wish list on Amazon. Organizations can add products and services they need to support their work to the wish list and send it out to patrons.

An organization’s wish list is shareable and can be managed the same way as individual wish lists.

To set a list up for an organization, head over to Accounts & Lists -> Create a List. Give the list a name to create it.

Once created, hover over More and click on Manage list. Under the pop-up that appears, you can choose Organization under who the list is for.

All gifts from this list will be shipped to your organization’s address. At this time, there’s no option to set items from a wish list to be shipped to multiple recipients.

  1. If someone purchases an item for me from my list and cancels the order before it ships, will it still show up under my purchased items or will it move it back to unpurchased?

    Reply
    • Sorry. This went to spam. If someone cancels something they ordered from your wish list, it should automatically move back to unpurchased on the list. HTH.

      Reply
    • Sorry, your question is not clear. Do you mean how do you get the link to your wish list so you can send it to someone to buy what they want from your wish list?

      Reply
  2. I used to be able to send one of my lists and the receiver of the link was able to see all my public lists. Is anyone else having this issue? Did they remove it? Or did I accidentally screw up my settings?

    Reply
    • The setting is still there. If you send a link to anyone, they will be able to see the list you sent plus any public lists. If that’s not available, you may have changed the settings. Check under “Manage List” in the top right corner of the Wish List. Then check privacy settings in the pop-up. HTH.

  3. If i buy someone something off their wishlist do they see WHO bought it? Will they be able to see the name and address of the buyer? I want to surprise someone with something off their wishlist but i would prefer to remain anonymous.

    Reply
    • Yes, they will see who bought it. I tried that and the person sent me a thank you note after they received the gift. You can hide your address, however. You could also change the name on the delivery note possibly to initials so the person won’t be able to identify the sender. HTH.

  4. How can I tell who purchased items off my list. It is not a registry. Some items have arrived without a packing slip, so I have no idea sent them.

    Reply
    • You won’t be able to see the name of the person, only that the item has been purchased from the list. The name should be included in the notification email or packing slip with the package. In this case, perhaps contacting Amazon will help to clear things up.

      Reply
        • You should have received some sort of notification email when the item was purchased/shipped unless you activated the Spoiler Settings. The spoiler settings mean you won’t know what was purchased until it arrives. Check under “Manage List” to make sure this setting isn’t enabled.

Alternatively, you can toggle the settings under “Filter & Sort” to see which items have been purchased. If it’s being purchased, then it’s on the way to you. HTH.

  5. I want to create one Christmas wish list that has items for more than one program participant. The items will need to be delivered to a different address for each participant. Is it possible to create one list for multiple participants where items will need to be delivered to different addresses for each participant?

    Reply
    • You can only use one address per Wish list, unfortunately. You will have to create different wish lists for each participant with their name then create a new address under “Manage List.” HTH.

  6. I bought several gifts for different people all at the same time, and they arrived together, but now I don’t remember whose gift was who. When I go back to their wishlist, the only Filter option is Unpurchased. Is there a way to see which wishlist each item came from?

    Reply
    • If you go back to your orders page on Amazon and print the page, you should be able to see what you ordered for who. Even if the address is hidden, the name of the person, the gift you bought and the city, will be visible on the orders page. So, top right corner -> Returns & Orders -> Filter order by 30 days, 3 months or by year. HTH.

  7. I’m looking at someone’s wish list and underneath the item it says “last purchased on “X” date. Does this mean someone else purchased that item on the list already?

    Reply
    • Usually, once an item is purchased, it’s removed from the Wish List to prevent duplicate purchases. If you’re seeing the item, it’s likely the person indicated they wanted more than one of the item.

      Reply
      • I thought it would be removed, but these are very specific items on one child’s wish list. It says “items needed 1” and then “last purchased” with a recent date.

        Reply
        • When setting up a wish list, there is a check box that allows you to keep items on the list even when it’s being purchased. The items will remain on the list with the date it was purchased last indicated. The person that created the wish list needs to go back to settings and uncheck that option for purchased items to disappear. HTH.

  8. I purchased 3 books off of my family’s wish lists. Now, I can’t remember which was for who. I cannot find ANYWHERE that it will let me know which list I purchased each from. Help please?!?!

    Reply
    • If you go back to your orders page on Amazon and print the page, you should be able to see what you ordered for who. When you print the list, you should be able to see the name of the person and the book you bought for them. Top right corner -> Returns & Orders -> Filter order by 30 days, 3 months or by year. Is that what you were looking for?

  9. So if someone were to buy me something, is there a setting for them not to be able to see my address that I have to choose? Or does it automatically make it to where they can’t see my address.

    Reply
    • Your address is confidential on Amazon. The only thing the buyer will see is your name, city, and postal code. However, if you enable the “third party shipping agreement” on your wish list, that means people can shop your wish list from other retailers that are not on Amazon and those retailers may show your address to buyers. To disable this function, go under More -> Manage list and deselect that option. HTH.

  10. Someone sent me a gift off of my amazon wishlist and it came with a small paper saying “Send a Thank you Note” by scanning a QR code. When I scan it, it takes me to the thank you note which will be sent as a Thank You email. Will this reveal my email to them?

    Reply
    • It shouldn’t but to make sure, you can log in to your Amazon account and manually send the thank you note from your account instead to reconfirm your email address isn’t revealed.

    • Can I track shipping of items purchased off of a Wish List? Packages tend to disappear off my porch. I’d like to retrieve them as soon as they arrive.

      Reply
      • To track items, you’d have to get the shipping details from the person who made the purchase. However, you should receive a notification from Amazon when someone makes a purchase off your list if you don’t have the spoiler settings enabled. Another way around this is to head over to common courier sites like UPS, USPS, DHL, etc and set up a notification. You can then receive an email every time your address is put on a package.

  11. Can automated Thank you emails be generated only from an Amazon Registry or birthday list? Or can they also come from wishlist created by charitable organizations? According to Amazon Customer Service, there currently is not an option for wish list.

    Reply
    • That won’t be possible, unfortunately. The packages are shipped as patrons order them and arrival is dependent on shipping times, location, item ordered on Amazon or third party sites, etc.

  12. Great article. We are a non-profit organization with a wish list. How can I thank someone who does not send a gift receipt? I have the packing slip. Is it possible to find it to thank the person?

    Reply
    • Non-inclusion of a gift receipt means the person has chosen to remain anonymous so you won’t be able to thank the person personally, unfortunately. You could contact Amazon’s customer service and see if they would be able to tell you the person’s name.

      Reply
  13. Can I send someone a different quantity than what they requested? I only want to send half the quantity (spend half the amount) of one of their list items.

    Reply
    • You can’t modify someone’s wish list items. You can only choose from the items on the list but you can’t moderate the quantity unless the wish list items allow for this.
