The previous article about How to Find a Good Gift for Someone mentioned Amazon or eBay gift lists as a research method.
I received an email asking how to find someone’s wish list on Amazon. I went in and played around a little bit then created this article.
It’s simple to find someone’s wish list on Amazon as long as the wish list is public. If they’ve set it to private, you will not be able to find it, unfortunately.
Be sure to have your gift ideas organizers on hand before you start digging into Amazon for wish lists.
I will also share how to create, customise and share your Amazon Wish List in this article.
What is the Amazon Wish List?
Amazon wish list is a tool which allows users to curate a list of items they want or hope to get for themselves sometime in future.
Unless specified, wish lists are usually public and anyone with a link can have access to it. Who would access your wish list?
Someone looking for ideas of what to get you for an occasion or the kind of things you like so they can DIY a gift for you.
How to Find Someone’s Amazon Wish List
You used to be able to search for Amazon wish lists with emails and names but it appears that no longer works.
There’s a new way to access your friend’s wish list and unfortunately, it’s not as top secret as it used to be.
Step 1 – Go to Amazon Home Page
Hover over the Accounts & Lists option in the top right corner and click on Wish List. You can also to directly to Amazon wish list page HERE.
Step 2 – Your Friends
You will see 3 bars at the top for Your Lists, Your Idea Lists and Your Friends. Click on Your Friends.
Step 3 – Ask Friends
There’s a ready-made message on the page asking your friend to share their list. Just click on the Email this message button to send it out.
You can also copy and customise the message before sending it out directly from your email address.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to access someone’s Wish List without their knowledge since they have to share it with you.
However, they won’t know what you purchased from the list until the gift arrives.
You need to have an Amazon account and be logged in before you can access any lists.
In case you’re the last person on earth who doesn’t have one, you can create a free Amazon account HERE.
Step 3 – Note Down the List
In case you want to come back, later on, to check out the list for another occasion, it will always be accessible from your lists page unless your friend or family member sets it to Private.
Step 4 – Get Organized
Go ahead and plan for the person’s gift to your heart’s content. You can sort Wish List items by title, date, price, priority or purchased status via the sort by and filter pull-down menus.
You can then add items to your cart for later or buy with 1 click. Sometimes, when you save items to your cart first, Amazon will notify you when there’s a deal going on or there’s a price drop.
You can also request gift wrap through Amazon so that’s sorted.
How to Create Your Own Amazon Wish List
This is one of my Amazon Wish Lists and I will walk you through the process in case you’re not familiar with it or have never done it before.
Step 1 – Create List
Hover over the Accounts & Lists option in the top right corner and click on Wish List. You can also go directly to Amazon wish list page HERE.
Click on Create a List at the top right corner. Click on Wish List. You will be prompted to give your Wish List a name.
You will also need to set it to private or public and enter your name or nickname. Then click Create List. I named mine Test Wish List.
Step 2 – Add Products to Your Amazon Wish List
To add things you want to your list, just go to any product page on Amazon. For instance, I want to add an Instant Pot to my wish list.
I conducted a search for it on Amazon then went to the relevant sales page.
Scroll down and look for the Add to List button on the right. Click on it and look for your list then add it.
A page will pop up showing you’ve added it to your list and you will be prompted to view your list or continue shopping.
If you click on view your list, it will take you to your list page. You can see the Instant Pot is now on my Test Wish List page. Add as many products to this list as you want.
Step 3 – Select Privacy Settings
At the top of your Wish List, select More. Under more, select Manage List. Under Privacy, set your list to Private or Public.
If it’s private, only you can see the list. Click Submit to confirm your privacy settings and you’re good to go.
You can also change your name, select your shipping address and set up your spoiler alert.
Opting for spoiler alert means you won’t know someone has purchased something from your list until it arrives.
This also prevents you from accidentally buying the same gift for yourself. Finally, you can delete the list if you no longer need it.
How Do I Share My Amazon Wish List?
To share your list, click the Send lists to others button. If it’s a collaborative wish list, you can invite others to view and invite.
However, if it’s just for you, you can choose view only and copy the link.
You can share this link via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter and any other social media accounts.
You can create as many wish lists as you want for every occasion. There is no limit. You can edit your lists, add comments and even prioritize it.
Do you know what the best thing about Amazon Wish Lists is? You can add items from other retailers to your wish list!
You can add items from Nordstrom, eBay, Target, Sally Beauty, etc using the Amazon Assistant browser extension.
How Do I Add Items from Other Retailers to My Amazon Wish List?
All you need to do is install the Amazon Assistant extension. You can find out how to install and uninstall the Amazon Assistant browser extension HERE.
What If Someone Already Bought Me Something on My Amazon Wish List?
To avoid a scenario where you buy yourself something someone has already purchased for you as a gift, Amazon has a Surprise Spoiler setting.
If you try to buy something that’s already been bought for you, a warning will come up to prevent duplicate purchases.
You can find the surprise spoiler settings under the Manage List dropdown. Check or uncheck Don’t spoil my surprises.
Does Amazon Wish List Remove Purchased Items?
Amazon automatically hides an item if someone has already purchased it. If you would like the item to remain on your list, you can choose this option under Manage List.
However, Amazon will indicate the item has already been purchased. Please note this option won’t work if you checked Don’t Spoil My Surprises.
Amazon Wish List Privacy – Does Amazon Show Your Address?
You don’t have to be scared about privacy when it comes to your delivery address.
If someone orders you something from your wish list and wants it to be sent to you directly, the only thing they will see is your name and city. They will not see your delivery address.
I’ve ordered from my friend’s lists before and when the shipping option came up, all I saw was her first name and her city so I can confirm this information is correct.
I hope I’ve been able to answer any questions you have about Amazon Wish Lists.
If you have any more, ask them in the comments section. Start your own Amazon Wish List HERE.
Happy Shopping! 🙂
